Calling all South Portland dog lovers!
As many of you know, SoPoDOG has been inactive recently – our fearless leader, Crystal Goodrich, moved to Toronto last fall, and I (Peggy Stewart) am a bit removed from dog action since my old yellow lab, Remy, just turned 14 and has aged out of the beach (and most other things, except for eating and sleeping)! Still, those of us who remember the Share Willard Beach experience in 2009 know that our advocacy group played a key role in enabling us to maintain the privilege of walking our dogs off-leash on the beach.
Several of us are planning to be at Willard and Hinckley this Saturday, April 21 (rain date April 28) from approximately 7:30 am until noon to reintroduce you to SoPoDog, remind park users of South Portland’s dog rules, and (we hope!) recruit a new generation of SoPoDog volunteers. At Willard, we will also have trash bags and gloves so that beachgoers can help with the South Portland Land Trust’s annual Earth Day cleanup (trash and poop!).
We remind you that starting Tuesday, May 1 through September 30, dogs are only allowed on Willard Beach from 7 – 9 a.m. and 7 – 9 p.m. As always, dogs must be on leash or under voice control, and owners must bring their own poop bags and (of course) pick up after their dogs. Please respect these rules and be considerate of other beach and park users.
We hope to see you at Willard or Hinckley on Saturday!
